چکیده

The Fisher information matrix of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation power spectrum coefficients is a fundamental quantity that specifies the information content of a CMB experiment. In the most general case, its exact calculation scales with the third power of the number of data points N and is therefore computationally prohibitive for state-of-the-art surveys. Applicable to a very large class of CMB experiments without special symmetries, we show how to compute the Fisher matrix in only O (

Probing cosmological parameters with the CMB: Forecasts from Monte Carlo simulations

The Fisher matrix formalism has in recent times become the standard method for predicting the precision with which various cosmological parameters can be extracted from future data. This approach is fast, and generally returns accurate estimates for the parameter errors when the individual parameter likelihoods approximate a Gaussian distribution. However, where Gaussianity is not respected (du...

Morphing the CMB: a technique for interpolating power spectra

The confrontation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) theoretical angular power spectrum with available data often requires the calculation of large numbers of power spectra. The standard practice is to use a fast code to compute the CMB power spectra over some large parameter space, in order to estimate likelihoods and constrain these parameters. But as the dimensionality of the space und...

Improved Forecasts for the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmological Distance Scale

We present the cosmological distance errors achievable using the baryon acoustic oscillations as a standard ruler. We begin from a Fisher matrix formalism that is upgraded from Seo & Eisenstein (2003). We isolate the information from the baryonic peaks by excluding distance information from other less robust sources. Meanwhile we accommodate the Lagrangian displacement distribution into the Fis...

Cosmic Complementarity: Probing the Acceleration of the Universe

We assess the accuracy with which Ωm and ΩΛ can be measured by combining various types of upcoming experiments. Useful expressions for the Fisher information matrix are derived for classical cosmological tests involving luminosity (e.g., SN Ia), angular size, age and number counts. These geometric probes are found to be quite complementary both to each other and to inferences from cluster abund...

Gravitational interaction of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons with matter perturbations present along the line-of-sight to the surface of last scattering modifies the shape of the CMB anisotropy power spectrum. Here I focus on (linear) integrated Sachs-Wolfe and (non-linear) gravitational lensing effects and discuss the detectability of the resulting distortions and their possible cons...
